BEST 18V Dewalt drill PERIOD!

Review Date: June 4, 2009
Reviewer: Brandon Giesinger, MN USA
I bought this drill to replace my Dewalt DC925, which fell off a roof and landed in a big nasty mud hole, I just figured the drill was toast and ordered a new one, saved the 925 for salvageable parts. The DCD950 and the DCD970 are the EXACT same drill except the clutch ring, which is black on the 950 and silver on the 970. The difference is the batteries that are included 950 has the XRPs and 970 has the new NANO's(lithium-ion). OK, back to the comparison
Pros of the DCD970/950 VS. the DCD925
1. Much Better balance
2. More power in both low and mid-range(Dewalt says the DC925 has 480 unit watts vs the DCD970's 450, but the DCD970 is more powerful
3. WAY smoother speed selector (moves back and forth, not in an semi-ellipse like the 925)
4. L.E.D light on front
5. Shorter in length
6. Drill/screw/hammerdrill, various clutch settings are no longer on the same ring, clutch now has its own ring.

Cons of the DCD970
1. Due to pressure from a group of so called "tool users" who ONLY seem to care about aesthetics, Dewalt changed the base to the new nano style, which means if you actually use the drill it only has space for one bit on the front and WILL Not hold a screw guide or short nutsetters very well, whereas the old style base could fit a screw guide for TEK screws on one side and a 1/4" and 5/16" short nutsetters for tapcons on the other side.

However, overall the DCD970/950 is a excellent drill and deserves 4.75 stars, if Dewalt would change the base it would be a 5 star item, but that will never happen thanks to people who care more about how a tool looks rather than how well it works.

I cleaned off my old DC925 and put in a fresh battery and the thing works!! Well now I have two, I guess that is what I get for asuming things, oh well I like the DCD970 better anyway.
Awesome drill

Reviewer: D. Mozingo, Canton, Ohio USA
Got this drill on sale at Lowes (they had a 15% off all Dewalt tools deal). My older XRP batteries were drained after almost 5 years of use, and I wanted the new lithium ion ones, so I figured I might as well get the drill with it. It's quite similar to my old DW988 XRP drill, even the single bit holder as the other review mentions, so I'm used to it. No problems so far, and it's standing up even better at tough jobs than the old DW988, though I'm sure the new lithium ion batteries have a hand in that.

I've dropped my old one off roofs, down ladders, and out windows, never having a problem. I expect nothing less with this new one.

Highly recommended!
My Best Drill Ever

I must have purchased and worn out a half dozen Dewalt drills over the past decade. Some where great units, others where very cheap quality. They were all 18V. So this time I took the time to research the Dewalt line up and not just grab whatever Home Depot was peddling. I also decided to stick with 18V since I had so many other tools of that series. This has got to be the perfect drill. The drill chuck is all metal, holds super tight and is of a machine tool quality. The transmission is 3 speed and the whole unit just has a very rugged feel. The power is awesome. While not scientific, this thing must have at least 50% more torque and power then my previous drills. I can drive 3.5" deck screws into dry wood using high speed and cut a 4" hole saw into wood using medium speed. I even mixed a 5 gal pale of drywall mud with a beater using the low speed. This thing is almost on par with my 1/2" dewalt corded drill. The other nice thing is that the lithium ion battery seams to hold its power right up to the last second. Then the battery just shuts itself off. This scared me the first time. I was really torquing the drill and I thought I had blown something. But that is just how the battery operates.
The only negative is that the drill is heavier then I have been used to. Of course this is offset by the lighter battery but you might be disappointed if you are looking for a feather weight. It also seams to be a little bit longer then some of my other drills of this style by about 3/4 inch. Getting in between studs seams to be a little tighter then I'm used too. But this drill also includes a hammer feature and it is way shorter then my previous hammer drills.
Over all I'm very happy with this drill and was very impressed with its performance.
A good one!

This is my second Dewalt drill...the first is probably over 10 years old. I am a farmer/rancher and bought this one for the new pole barn going up this spring. We recently put up over 400 feet of buck and rail fence over rocks along the borders. We used TimberLocs to fasten it all together and this thing worked perfectly and forcefully with the hammerdrill option...very quick. The barn will have more fasteners but with lumber that is no more challenging than what was in this fence.
This is a good unit and I can't imagine a better one.
lots of power, 3-speeds, fast recharging

Review Date: September 29, 2009
Reviewer: Phillip Marsh, Texas
This is an excellent drill. DeWalt was slow to release a lithium-ion battery powered cordless drill but the XPR is the best of the best. What sets it apart from those from other manufacturers is the 3-speed gearing. Cordless drills have limited power and work much better for high-torque demanding hole cutters or work materials when the they can be geared down. Having a 3rd low range gear is very useful and this drill will more readily power through situations where a Milwaukee, Makita, would bog down and my Hitachi would overheat and just suddenly stop.

This drill also demonstrates why the torque specifications of the drill manufacturers need to be taken with a grain of salt. This XRP drill will out drill the Milwaukee M18 cordless that in theory has 20-25% more power. Having the right gear reduction settings is really critical to getting all the available power out of the drill.

I like the side handle that grips the drill and can be rotated 360 degrees. I use it not to support the drill but to control it when it starts to bind - as when using one of the miserable little Lenox One Tooth (not recommmended) hole cutters or drilling into steel with a large bit. I wish that DeWalt had included the option of adding a depth rod to the side handle as this can be helpful when boring into masonry and needing a fixed depth for an expansion bolt.

The clutch action works well though it does not feel as smooth as the Milwaukee to which I am more accustomed. The clutch also is more difficult to tighten and tends to lock up requiring pliers to loosen it.

Battery life is excellent so long as you stay away from bi-metal hole saws which are incredibly inefficient and can suck a battery dry after a single hole. Recharging is very fast, 15 minutes or less. I do wish that manufacturers would use more charger LED indicator light designs. With Milwaukee there is a red LED that lights up while the battery is charging. When the charging is complete a green LED lights. Pretty easy to figure out and no manual needed. With DeWalt there is a blinking red light that then becomes solid. Better than Hitachi where a green light means the battery is too hot to charge. With my four different chargers there are 4 different LED light schemes to provide me with the charging status. It does not have to be so complicated.

The carry case, though not nearly as nice as those from Milwaukee, is a sturdy one with metal latches and an oversize handle. There are no convenient places for drill bits and other small items which would be useful.

The one problem I have with the drill is its chuck which is difficult to tighten and even harder to loosen back up after drilling. It often takes pliers to loosen the chuck and remove the drill bit. This may get better over time after the drill has had more use but for now it is a bit of a pain.

As lithium-ion drills go this is the best one I have used and I have 18v models from Makita, Hitachi, and Milwaukee, that I use as well.
But for the chuck it would be hands down the best drill on the market in terms of raw performance. It does not have the same balance as the Milwaukee or lighter weight of the Makita and the Hitachi drills but the 3-speed gear reduction is not something I would want to do without.

I have switched over to using high performance TCT hole cutters and adjustable tungsten carbide hole cutters and the 3 speed ranges of the DeWalt XRP is a perfect companion drill for much faster hole cutting, and cutting much larger holes in wood than I would have though possible with a hand drill much less a cordless one, and getting the maximum number of holes drilled or screws set per battery charge. For light to medium duty use I prefer the Milwaukee M18 which is a more refined tool in terms of its metal chuck and clutch designs. For heavy duty drilling the DeWalt XRP drill with its 3-speed ranges and much faster recharge time is the best tool I have come across and it will definitely stay on the truck.

Reliable, long-lasting LITHIUM-ION power is just one part of a full feature set.
M12 Lithium-Ion Power: Compact, Lightweight, and Dependable
Cordless power frees you from the cost and waste of disposable batteries and the hassle of setting up and using manual tools, but a cordless tool is only as reliable as its battery--that's where M12 LITHIUM-ION batteries come in. You can trust the 1.4-amp-hour lithium-ion battery that powers each Milwaukee M12 tool to deliver long runtimes and fade-free power. Lithium-ion batteries will also offer long battery life, so you'll save money by avoiding replacements.

Plus the M12 LITHIUM-ION battery charger delivers fast, 30-minute recharges, so you can be sure that your tools will be ready to use when you reach for them.

Fast becomign a Milwaukee Fan

Review Date: August 3, 2009
Reviewer: Dave,
I purchased the 1/4" hex chuck driver a while back and can't say enough good things about it. When I saw this slightly beefier cordless drill from Milwaukee in the same product family I couldn't wait to get it. It's a great size for light duty work. I like the 3/8" chuck because finding a drill bit with a 1/4" hex shank for the other non spade bit drivers that produces a hole larger than 1/4" is not as easy. Having a higher speed range for drilling and having the clutch are also pluses above the basic driver. I have a Bosch 1/2" 18v hammer drill for heavy duty jobs but it's WAY too much drill for light jobs around the house. This Milwaukee drill/driver is a great intermediary range tool. The trigger pull is smooth and consistent and makes controlling the speed of the drill easy, the clutch has enough range to handle plenty of diverse needs and the size is very convenient to have in a holster if you're working on a ladder or wearing it on a tool belt all day. The life of the lithium ion batteries is great and the recharge is pretty quick at 30 or so minutes. The battery technology has clearly come a ways from my old DeWalt 18v NiCd setup. (which was stolen and is the reason I branched out to different systems such as the Bosch and the Milwaukee) The only down side I can find on this drill (and the 1/4" hex driver as well) is that when I'm using the drill in reverse, my index finger on my right hand tends to hit the "forward" button. It's not a large problem, just something I have to consciously think about when using it in reverse. That's a large hands issue though, not really a fault of the drill.
Compact power that lasts all day

Review Date: December 8, 2009
Reviewer: J. Ralls, Fremont, CA USA
This little wonder is a great jobsite drill/driver. It's small and light enough to fit in a tool-belt bag. The battery has enough charge so that the two it comes with last the whole day, with plenty left over. It has plenty of power for most home-building jobs short of driving lag bolts, and the little headlight is great for setting screws in dark recesses.

My only complaint is that the various manufacturers of similar tools didn't standardize their battery packs, so pick the brand that has the right combination of other tools for the work you do.
Great tool

Reviewer: James Rhodes, St. Louis
Even though I got this at Home Depot instead of Amazon (sorry, Amazon) this is a great tool and I think is destined to become one of my favorites. The size is right and it is quite powerful for a small drill. I needed it to drill some holes in a rather confined space and this worked well.
M12 3/8" Drill/Driver, a Solid Choice

Review Date: July 25, 2009
Reviewer: G. Abad, SF Bay Area, CA, USA
I just received this Milwaukee M12 drill and am very pleased with its quality and performance to date. All features (chuck, clutch, transmission, trigger, light, etc.) work very well. It is heavier than most other drills this size but still clearly lighter than my 14.4V 1/2" Dewalt Nicad drill. It will work well on smaller jobs and even some big ones. The hard case is of very high quality. I am happy with this purchase and recommend this Milwaukee drill to anyone in search of a solid 3/8" cordless drill.
Nice Product so far

Review Date: September 12, 2009
Reviewer: R. Gettler, Leesburg, VA
I just purchased this product a few days ago, and so far it has met all of my expectations. It is typical Milwaukee, like all my other Milwaukee tools. My DeWalt 1/2 cordless impact drill/driver is starting to have brush issues, seemingly somewhat prematurely, although it did work well so far. I decided on the smaller Milwaukee 3/8" drill/driver after seeing that nice little rapid charging lithium battery pack at Home Depot one day. It won't replace the 1/2" vibrating drill needs, but rather fill a gap when a smaller light weight job comes up. Besides, I can get out the corded Makita for that anyway... If this tool turns out like the 2 sawsalls, portable band saw, drywall driver, 2 circular saws, dovetail jig, etc... This will be a great tool.

Excellent value for the price

This is definitely *not* a wimpy drill - I've had a number of cordless drills over the years and for the price I don't think you can touch this one. Seriously powerful, holds a charge for a very long time (didn't use mine for 1 year, picked it up and it still seem to have a full charge). I would be very impressed if I had paid 75$'s for this one!
Awesome Drill

This drill has tremendeous torque. I used my first drill to bore 1/2 inch bolt holes through marine grade piling timbers. I was so impressed that I bought a second one and, I was afraid the price would go up because it is such a great tool. The price has not gone up in over six months so I might by myself another one for Christmas.

An awesome drill at a tremendeous price.
Can't beat it for the money.

This is a very powerful drill. It's not a Hilti or a Bosch by a long, long, long shot, for sure...but look at the price! I don;t know how long it will last, but it sure is powerful. Even if it only lasts a few years, you can't go wrong.
aww shucks.

Reviewer: BarberBart,
Value to price...its a nice deal but as with a lot of off brand things. I think there might be a question of dependability in its reliability. I feel I got a nice deal for my $50 I got a drill that I worked over pretty good for a year... but now.. as with another review my charger or battery is giving out. the light does not light on the charger and the charge is not holding.

THE drill...GOOD FEATURES I like the clutch settings, bubble levels, slave handle and power. I like the high and low gear setting except my drill does not like to stay in 2nd gear but I think thats because it kept getting knocked out of gear while under power. The gear switch is along the top and if your drill is sliging along somethig while you drill the switch can get pulled. so a more obsure or recessed switc would be nice.(I did file my swith down to help with the problem.) Although for most projects weight is not a big factor for me.. when I build its often fix-it/Build-it all over the place so the weight and size do not lend themselves to small delicate jobs nor to working for hours over head, or even carrying it arond on a drill holster. So I would never say don't buy this drill but I would say... know its limitations, mainly size in tight places and the fact that it Might last a year or you may get a good one and it could last 5 years. I will probably go with a bit more money and a lighter drill to fit my style of work.

Its probably worth what you pay but its not for every job.
Battery life and charger are worthless. Good luck with Customer Service

I purchased this drill roughly one year ago. I agree with the other reviews about value for the price. However, I have a serious issue with the company's (Allied Consumer by the way not Black Max) level of customer service. I've called the 800 number repeatedly with the same result. A recording tells me their office hours followed by a recording saying that I've either called outside of normal office hours or they've stepped away. Further, if you leave a message I bet you won't get a call back. The problem with the product I have is the battery. When I place the battery in the charger the green/red indicator lights go out completely and the battery never charges, which to me indicates either a problem with the battery or a problem with the charger - neither of which can be purchased anywhere I know of. On the other hand my little 12V Black and Decker drill is still going strong and the battery only takes an hour to charge. I don't think I'll be purchasing anymore off brand items like this any time soon. Stick with what you recognize! Dewalt, B&D, Etc.

Product Description

Torque, torque and more torque! This package is nothing but power. The 14.4-volt cordless impact driver and the MForce drill put super strength in your hands for the toughest tasks.

Despite being beastly powerful, this impact driver is shockingly compact and lightweight, with a total length of under 7 inches and weighing in at a mere 3-1/2 pounds including the battery. But don’t let that mislead you -- impacts per minute range from 0 to 3,200, with a maximum tightening torque of 1,240 in./lbs. And the power doesn’t quit, either, because the nickel-metal-hydride battery packs a greater capacity and longer run time than standard nickel-cadmium versions. Even though it fits snugly in the hand, it’s an absolute dynamo in the power department, and the variable speed is smooth as silk.

There are two nifty light-related features on this Makita, and we weren’t all that impressed with them on paper. But in reality, the phosphorescent rubber bumper immediately catches your eye, whether you’re rummaging in your truck, fumbling in your garage or scanning the job site for any left-behind tools. And the integrated high-output LED really does light up the workpiece, saving you time and frustration. We always like to see tools with easily accessible and easily replaced brushes, because if your tool’s in the repair shop, it’s not making you any money.

The MForce drill/driver is just as powerful and just as rugged as the impact driver, with the same high-efficiency nickel-metal-hydride battery power. Speed ranges from 0 to 400 and 0 to 1,300 rpm to tackle just about any drilling or driving job, with a Makita-made Shift Lock Drive that lets you switch quickly between modes, locking out the clutch for drilling work. And like the impact driver, the drill in this combo is compact, lightweight and easy on your hardworking body. The rubberized grip absorbs any vibration and feels great in your hand.

The fluorescent worklight will come in handy, too, whether you’re in a crawlspace or under an engine. All three pieces are Makita quality, and the price on this combo beats buying them separately. -- Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Do I need an impact driver?

Review Date: November 18, 2005
Reviewer: John Henry Newman,
I can't answer that question for you, but I will venture a guess that you will most likely not regret purchasing this one! After checking specs and tool reviews on Dewalt, Bosch, ect., I decided on the Makita and have been extremely pleased with the results. Until you've used an impact driver, it is hard to imagine how much easier they are to use than cordless drills for driving screws. This impact driver has true variable speed control. That is, you get high torgue at slow speeds so you can slowly and precisely tap in those stubborn screws. Also, it is small and lightweight and goes where some cordless drills won't. The battery seems to last forever--significantly longer than in a cordless drill. Lastly, I thought the light integral with the driver was a gimmick, but it has come in very handy many times! After some getting used to it, you can turn the light on without spinning the bit.

The cordless drill in the kit is just fine and it is nice to have a separate tool for drilling only. I cannot comment on the worklight, because my kit did not come with one.
Replaced my old drills, happily

I originally researched impact drivers to help with installing bolts for deck post support braces. Using a manual ratchet was taking forever, to put it mildly, and my drills - even the all-powerful, plug-in DeWalt - couldn't make much of a dent through 6" PT pine posts.

I looked into air compressor, plug-in and battery-powered drivers. This Makita impact driver kept gaining my attention in numerous reviews and this set seemed rather attractive for the price.

My current drills (a plug-in DeWalt and 16.0V battery Craftsman) were OK, but the first was overpowered with no brake, while the latter was bulky and sudden off the mark.

This Makita set is quality in terms of strength, finesse and usability.

The impact driver was incredibly effective at sending 4" bolts into 6" posts in a fraction of the time it took by hand. My plug-in, monstrously powerful DeWalt could not do this on its own: apparently, the vibrational motions of the impact drill is what helps enable such things. More typical screws go in without effort and rarely strip, anymore. It easily loads/unloads bits with a locking mount, which most of mine happened to be. An old DeWalt locking mount set of typical wood bits, screw types, etc. has made this my go-to tool in most drilling applications. I bought the optional Makita replacement head with keyless chuck, but have yet to find a need for installing it.

The impact driver has a small LED light for illuminating the surface of your work area - might seem like a nothing, but there's been many times where that was the only effective lighting I could obtain, saving much frustration of hunting around or missing a mark.

Suddenly living in a new world of capabilities, I went through the house looking for things to fix. I know it sounds odd, but this impact driver is just incredibly useful AND fun. I was able to replace a previously stripped 3" #10 screw in my front door frame (lodged incorrectly during an otherwise successful attempt to install a new lockset) with a screw extractor - something that was never successful my regular drills before. Maybe it was just luck this time and not a property of the impact driver - I don't know. Something that I *do* know is that the prior, written-off strike plate installation was removed and replaced quickly with a new assembly . . . and now works smoothly - it had been annoying me for years.

The small head of this impact driver has worked well in tighter spaces than my other drills, such as between joists when installing a bathroom heater/vent.

The Makita drill has picked up the slack for all other wood and metal drilling/screwing applications. It is balanced and allows for fine control. The locking head quickly ratchets to tightness around each bit - far superior ease and fit compared to other drills I've used.

And, though it might seem an unnecessary extra, that work light has been thoroughly useful. I've been able to finish outside work that slipped into the darker hours without needing to get out the extension cord and find an outlet. Small work areas which are tough for flashlights or my other battery-powered work lights are easy to illuminate by the wide, cool swath of light that this unit offers, and that's partially because it stands up or hangs easily. Bulbs in my other work lights will annoyingly break due to temperature or even minor impacts, but this light has been through much abuse and keeps performing as from the first use.

Oh, and the carrying case is quite convenient.

My only bother is that batteries need recharging a bit through the day when doing alot of work, but they actually seem to last better than my prior 16.0V Craftsmen drill/light set.

I initially looked into this bundle for the impact driver alone, but have been thrilled with the entire package value. Easily recommended.
Makita just keeps creaming the competition!

This is my 3rd Makita drill/driver, my 1st I keep as a spare and my 2nd one was stolen out of my garage (grrrr!). What floors me is not just the brilliant design, build quality and reliability which I now expect from Makita as much I expect it from most other Japanese-designed products---it's the astounding BANG FOR THE BUCK which this packet offers.

You get an excellent quality impact driver that puts screws through wood or metal like bullets through butter, plus an excellent general-purpose drill, and last but not least a fluorescent work light that is actually very practical and useful rather than being just some worthless freebie...for about the same price that I originally paid for just the impact driver (the one that was stolen) by itself! I also appreciated that the carrying case now has metal fasteners instead of the plastic ones all my previous Makita carrying cases had...nice improvement.

My advice is, snap this kit up before Makita comes to its senses and stops offering it!
best bang for your buck

This driver kit is by far the best i have seen. I build custom stairs and we use combination drive screws for installation from 1 1/2" - 3" and with a square drive bit. This impact driver sends the screws packing without twisting your hand off or stripping the screw, i've even driven 4" square drive screws through solid oak newels without a problem. The light is perfect for working under stairs with limited light because you can turn it on by pulling the trigger just slightly without the bit turning. Also, it is so compact and lightweight it can go places that the big guns cant. This kit is great because it comes with a free 1/2" chuck screwgun along with a light as well as the impact driver. I recommend it to anyone who frequently uses screwguns for any application. It will change your life, guaranteed.
Very good!

I'm a mechanic, have many hobbies, and also do part time house building with my dad. He is a general new construction contractor.

The florescent light starts off as a Freebie... You just don't care about the light. Until you use it!!! It simply becomes so handy to have in the case, you can't describe it until you've needed it & it's been waiting in there for you. I've not used mine for long amounts of time (1/2 hour max), battery life seems to be good.

The drill driver is good. I agree with the previous. The improved chuck on the new drill/driver is MUCH better than the old one. (I DO have the last model 18v Makita cordless drill/driver to compare it to. It's only a year old...)
The 14.4v drill is more compact, and more solidly built than it's one year older 18v brother. The 14.4v driver is slower, and lacks the power compared to the 18v+ ones, but it is as strong as any other well made 14.4v is. It's got more power on a descent charged battery than any 3/8ths cored drills have. You can drill descent sized holes in metal, and if you're patient tackle some large holes in wood with the correct bits. I still use the 18v to do so, but the 14.4 does fine.

The impact driver... The sole reason to look at this kit. With 103.33 ft-ft of torque it's is NOT a slouch compared to other 1/4, or 3/8" drill-drivers. I use mine sometimes to drive lag bolts into 2*by's and it will do it all day.
My main use is because I'm a mechanic. Being so much shorter than other/larger models, is a huge plus. I formerly had a 300ft-lb Dewalt that tore up. The first impression as a mechanic is that the numbers are 1/2-1/3 of larger 1/2" driver. YOU WILL NOT miss the power at all. The simple fact is that if this won't drive what you're looking to do, you wouldn't reach for another cordless that's bigger. You break out the breaker bar, a large torque wrench, or air tools.

There is no use to the larger tools.

The 14.4 impact driver SPANKS any cordless drill/driver of ANY voltage available in ANY possible statistic. Power, life, size, amazingly the impact driver spins far faster than any drill/driver I've seen also. Don't be afraid of seeing the 14.4 on the battery compared to larger tools. It will do the work.(I can't say that enough)

(3/8" impact drivers are the same thing as 1/4" impact drivers. They just install a larger chuck, do yourself a favor & get the smaller 1/4" driver... You can buy packs of 1/4-3/8" for a few dollars, or spend money for a titanium one. Trust me... You're not going to snap a 1/4" drive driving a socket. Skip the 3/8" drivers. They offer nothing.)

The trigger is real. Just like any drill/driver would be, it is completely variable speed. I will say that when doing mechanical work, or work on small things, the trigger is too fast. Until you get a fine control over the trigger, you will find yourself over-tightening small objects, or snapping heads off if you go at it too fast.

For small torque items, a drill/driver would be better as they offer more control at slower speed. Wait... The kit has a drill/driver!

I love my kit. The impact driver is the main draw, but what it can't do, the small, well made 14.4 drill/driver will do. The light is candy, but you WILL learn to appreciate it after you need light, then realize you've got a bright wide angle florescent light with you.

Good Idea

I describe this as a cross between a drill and a power screwdriver. Is has the power (12v) of a good cordless drill, but has a smaller head that articulates. It can get into spaces a normal drill won't go. It can't quite manage as tight a space as a power screwdriver, but they don't have 12volt umph. It's well made and has a clutch feature. It uses quick realease 1/4" hex bits. It can't accept standard drillbits, unless there is some sort of adapter out there. Several drill bits, screwdriver bits, and nutdriver bits are included and store in the hardshell carrycase. An easy to use around the house tool. Bosch makes a similar tool that costs double what this does.

I received this Black and Decker XD1200K drill/driver back in May '07. So far I like it. It's easy to use, the battery works great, and it recharges quickly. It comes with enough drills and screwdriver heads to do most jobs. I have been using it to replace the protruding nails on my sundeck with galvanized screws. I also used it to drill holes for a new latch in the metal frame of my sliding screen door. One of the things I like about it, is that you can use it in angled gun form but you can also use it as an inline straight drill/screwdriver which makes it easier for me to drill a straight hole. I think the 12V battery gives more than enough power for household repairs and projects. If you need an excellent, all-around, flexible, versatile cordless drill/screwdriver for a variety of applications, this is the one.

NOTE: It is now October 2007 and I still love this drill/screwdriver. I can adjust it easily for drilling or fastening screws (I actually read the manual). Plus I haven't needed to buy any additional drill bits or screwdriver heads for it. It even comes with ratchet sockets, which I used to fix my air conditioner fan in August. This is a wonderful, powerful all-around tool that I use a lot more than I thought I would.
NOTE: Well now it's May 2008 and yes I still love this drill/driver. I use it all the time - I own a house so there's always something.. It never wimps out. Also the battery seems to last a long time between rechargings. I'm glad I bought it.
NOTE: It's now October 2008 and this is still my favorite tool. As a gift I received a B&D drill index thingie full of drill, screwdriver, and ratchet/wrench bits that fit. So far I have only used the 2 screwdriver bits, one of the ratchet bits, and most of the drill bits that originally came with it, but I'm ready for anything now..
NOTE: It's now January 2010 and I still love this tool. I keep it on a shelf in the kitchen so I know where it is. Last week I assembled a desk with it. I still use it all the time.
Great Product- ready when you are.

I recently bought a house for the first time and did not have a cordless driver. I picked this up, thinking that it might come in hand. Little did I know that EVERY single project I encountered, would involve this little guy. I have had it for several months, now, and have only recharged it a couple of times- it holds it's charge well and run like a top. I have to be honest, I have not used the rotating head on it at all, but it is narrow enough to fit in tight places and the accessory bits are just about all you could ever need. My 12v CORDED DeWalt is going to be doing nothing but collecting dust, with this thing in my arsenal. This is one of the best $50 I have ever spent.
Great Drill

Although we purchased this drill as a gift to my in-laws for Christmas, We needed to borrow it to hang out new kitchen cabinets it made the job so much easier we also have a black and decker but it doesn't have the option of flipping the head to a straight or other directions which we needed to do for our do it your self job! Its a great drill! We have bought a lot of Black and Deckers products and we couldn't be happier with the products and the price.

Best 18 volt drill at any price

Review Date: March 18, 2010
Reviewer: Peter Mitchell,
Drills change and with lithium-ion batteries it is a whole new ballgame. A serious downside to lithium-ion that all the manufacturers avoid talking about is their tendency to have a runaway reaction that can end in fire as with the Dell laptop batteries that had to be recalled. All the drill manufactures put protective circuitry into their battery packs to prevent this from happening but this also impacts drill performance, often severely. Where it is most felt is with high torque drilling which is where in the past people wisely turned to a corded drill. The one exception I have found are the new DeWalt DCD940 and DCD970 drills.

The DeWalt drills really live up to their specifications better than any other drill we use which includes the Milwaukee 2611 and the Makita BDF451 18 volt lithium-ion drills. A lot of the credit goes to the 3-speed gearbox and the speed selections it provides. Every other drill manufacturer except Ridgid provide only 2-speed ranges and the lower the drill power the more you need more speed options with the lithium batteries to minimize shutdown problems. I can make any other drill stall out and drain their battery in minutes except for the DeWalt drills and to a lesser degree the Milwaukee 2611 (just need to not jump on it but gradually increase drilling speed).

After the initial charging of the batteries the recharge is as fast as any battery including the Makita 3Ah batteries. Makita batteries charge in 30 minutes as advertised but in the user manual Makita advises users to leave the battery in the charger for an additional 60 minutes to cool it down. Makita may be overly cautious but it points the the faster charging times probably causing damage and shortening the life of lithium-ion cartridges.

The keyless drill chuck on the DeWalt drills is the only one that never loosens up while drilling whether using a very small drill bit or a very large hole cutter. The first few times I used the drill I had to use pliers to loosen the chuck but after that it was as easy to loosen as other chucks but the self-tightening design works great.

Something that is not obvious from the review where it is never mentioned or the pictures is what happens when you use both hands to hold the drill which is something everyone does at times. The DeWalt drills are the only ones that have large side slots on both sides but not the back. When you press down on the drill your hand does not covered the cooling vents the way it does on every Makita and Milwaukee drill. Over time the drill motor should have fewer problems as it is not getting cooked when used in tough drilling where the natural tendency is to use both hands on the drill (drilling in metal or using a bi-metal hole saw for example).

The side handle is also a good feature as it can be attached and positioned where it will provide the most leverage for your other hand. With Ridgid and Milwaukee the side handle has to stick straight out and this is not nearly as good a setup. There is no way to attach a drilling depth stop rod like some Makita and DeWalt drills which is unfortunate as this is a very handy feature when drilling holes for anchors in masonry.

There is an internal brake that stops the drill very quickly but with a loud clank which is a little worrisome. It does work very well and the warranty is good and DeWalt has an excellent service record so it is not likely to be a problem.

The drill is rated in watts which is not unusual in general for some items but it is unusual for drills that are usually rated in inch pounds of torque. The power that the motor provides to the drill bit or hole saw is greater than with the Makita BDF454 and even the excellent Milwaukee 2611 drill (which lacks a 3-speed gearbox and has an over sensitive battery protection scheme). It is the go to drill for demanding jobs. I routinely cut 6-1/4" holes in siding and even 1" subflooring using Blue Boar TCT hole cutters which are the only hole cutter to use with cordless drills.

Batteries charge quickly and take no more time than those from Makita and less time than the ones from Milwaukee on their chargers. This is neither good nor bad as faster charging is likely to reduce the number of charge cycles before the battery fails. Even Makita which brags about its quick charge times of 30 minutes for its 3 Ah batteries neglects to mention that in its own user manuals it recommends leaving the battery for an additional 60 minutes on the charge to cool it down. The big difference is between the half size batteries and the full size ones. The half size have been an easy way to get the weight down for their drills but in my experience the 1/2 size batteries not only last not even close to half as long they also drain much faster and poop out with tough drilling where a lot of drill torque is involved. I have found myself completely draining a 1/2 size battery after a single large hole in OSB or MDF. For light drilling or screw driving the 1/2 size batteries are OK but when you want to buy a couple full size batteries later the cost is nearly as much as a kit that has a drill and two batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries hold their charge a long time which is great for occasional use and they are a little bit lighter than NiCad batteries with the same rating though not by a lot. Overall drill weight is decreased by only 15% on average which is not cause to break out the band. A less desirable trait is that lithium-ion cells can have a runaway reaction if subjected to too great a current draw and so all the tool manufacturers with lithium-ion battery packs use a protective circuit to protect the battery and the user. If the maximum theoretical power of the drill motor were able to be used the battery might overload and catch fire so this theoretical load is not allowed to take place. The bottom line is that the drill motor will lose power dozens of time per minute with demanding applications and actual drilling time can double for high torque jobs. Two ways to minimize the problem are to get a drill with a 3-speed gearbox and the second is to get a higher rated drill than you think you will ever need. 450 inch pound rated drills with NiCad batteries perform better than 450 inch pound drills with lithium-ion batteries and it is a good idea to replace your 450 rated NiCad drill with a 550 to 650 rated drill that will be using lithium-ion batteries.

The choice of hole cutter is the single greatest factor in either drilling holes you might have thought much too big for a light weight cordless drill like the DCD970 and in how much of the battery charge is consumed per hole. With the usual 18 volt cordless drill with lithium-ion batteries the largest hole that can be drilled will be less than 2 inches in diameter using a bi-metal cordless hole saw, self-feed drill bit, or auger. Use one of the modern hole saws with the big teeth and large slots in the sides and it is practical to cut holes 5 inches in diameter with the same drill even in tough materials like , MDF, OSB, brick, and stucco. I also can get through an entire day of hole cutting and drilling with a single battery with my Blue Boar TCT hole cutters and now only take along the one spare battery that came with the DCD940 kit.

BLUE BOAR TUH12 -12 Piece Super Duty Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw kit - 2-1/4"Cut Depth. Cut 10x as fast and use 1/40th battery charge. Cordless Drills can cut holes 3x as large as with bi-metal hole saws. Deep side gullets for fast plug removal

The LED is a feature that one quickly comes to appreciate and I would have a hard time buying a cordless drill without the light. Often when drilling in attics or crawspaces or even inside cabinets the LED light is great to have to see where you want to drill or to see the top of a screw I want to drive.

One thing that could stand improvement is the kit's case which is strong enough but lacks the special recesses like the great Milwaukee cases. It also has no place to put a drill set or other drilling items.

If I had to pick one drill to do everything, even take the place of my stud drill, it would be either this DeWalt DCD940 or the hammer version, the DCD970. That it sells for a lot less than other top tier drills is just icing on the cake - just use the money you save to replace your hole saws with modern hole cutters. Comparing this drill to the popular Makita drills is like comparing a jeep to a Miata sports car. The Miata looks sleek but the jeep will take you a lot more places.

If you only need a lightweight cordless drill most of the time for light drilling and screw driving a 12 volt cordless along with a 3/8 or 1/2 inch corded drill may be a better solution for the average DIY person. For me the ability to grab the DCD940 and know I don't have to worry about the last time its charge was topped off and know that it is going to make whatever hole or drive as many screws as needed makes it my favorite drill.

truly a heavy duty drill that can take the place of a stud drill

All of our drills had been either Milwaukee or Makita models but as we got more into using lithium-ion batteries we had problems with these other manufacturers drills and batteries. Found out that the lithium-ion have a safety protection to keep them from overheating and catching fire and the result is less torque in high load situations. The drill shuts down and the safety protection cuts all the power to the drill so the motor stops and the light goes off.

Two ways to minimize the drawbacks are to get the biggest battery you can find and get a drill with as many speeds as possible so you can match the torque load to the battery and not overload it. The DeWalt DCD940 and the DCD970 hammer drill version combine both features with the largest battery (and heaviest) and a 3-speed gearbox. Add the two together and this drill keeps on going and going through any kind of material that stops our other drills cold.

We regularly grab the DeWalt when there is any doubt about how tough the drilling will be. Used to be we would get an extension cord and one of the cord drills out of the truck but so far we have been able to do very well with the DCD940. We cut through stucco walls and the plywood sheet and thick plaster ceilings and make 8" holes in cement board siding, and 6" holes in subflooring and all with this drill and the battery life is excellent.

Charging is very fast but does not seem to overheat the batteries the way the Makita charger does and that bodes well for longer battery life. May be why the warranty on the DeWalt batteries is twice as long as for the Makita lithium-ion batteries.

Surprises me that people will buy drill A instead of drill B because it is lighter or fits better into a small hand but then expect it to drill just as well as the bigger and heavier drill. The extra weight is from more speeds, a heavier duty gear box and a larger capacity battery. Most of the weight difference with the 8 models we have in use is from the battery.

Always wise to avoid using bi-metal hole saws or selfeed drill bits with any cordless drill. Use big gullet hole saws like the Blue Boar TCT or the Milwaukee Big Hawg or the Bosch TCHS hole cutters and your drill will cut a lot faster and your batteries will last a lot longer.

BLUE BOAR TSF12 12 Piece High Performance Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw kit - 2-1/4" Cut Depth. Cut 10x as fast and using 1/40th the battery power. Cordless Drills cut holes 3x as large versus bi-metal hole saws. Deep side gullets for fast plug removal

Side handle mounts in any position which I like. Not as smooth to tighten as the Makita side handle but it works just as well. Clutch is amazingly good at holding onto even the smallest bit or a large shank on a core boring bit in masonry. Every other drill we use will loosen up on masonry, but the DeWalts never do. Their self-tightening chuck works as well as advertised.

Case is better than past DeWalt cases and at least it is included with the kit but it is nothing to write home about. Prefer the masons bag types of pouches that have pockets for bit sets and the like but that is a cheap item to buy later.

At first the drill seems heavy and off in its balance but after it is used a couple times on tough drilling jobs it starts to feel like a pro level tool that will not break down in the middle of a job.

There are lots of cheaper drills and lots of lighter drills but when the going gets tough this is the drill we grab without hesitation.
This is an insane drill

I bought this drill over the DC720KA and wow, this is an insane drill. When you pick this thing up, you know you are holding onto something extremely tough and robust. The business end is all steel, the chuck is all steel, and it has two clutch rings, so you can switch from drill mode to driver mode without having to run all the way through the clutch. The 3 speed transmission is all metal and it changes with a nice solid click, I have used so many other drills with 2 and 3 speed transmissions and sometimes the only way to make them change is to squeeze the trigger a little while changing - this drill has none of that - just a solid click.

Pull the trigger and you realize just how powerful this thing is, I have used it a lot with #12 2.5" screws into studs with no pilot holes while installing shelving (which is how I killed my trusty 18v Black & Decker) and this drill just drives them home effortlessly. I am using it with the XRP NiCd batteries, although this drill has the smaller base for the Lithium Ion batteries, but that is just because I have NiCd batteries. I may buy a Lithium Ion battery when one of my NiCd batteries dies, but for now, they work great.

If you are looking for the ultimate solid 18V Cordless drill, this is it, if you want a hammer function as well, then go for the DCD950KX same drill with a hammer function.

After writing all of this, I am still considering selling this drill and getting a DC720KA as I feel the more compact drill would be more suitable for my use. This is a monster, and I really will not do it justice in the way I work, so I really just want something lighter and smaller.

A lightweight alternative to higher voltage cordless tools.

I would not trade in my old 18 volt Milwaukee cordless tools, but there are many times I need to get in a tight space or just don't need the extra power (with the extra weight that goes along with it). This set is great for that. The lithium ion batteries are great in that they have the gauge, but when they quit that is it. With the old NiCads you could get that last screw in maybe w/o having to grab another battery.

Oh what a difference

Have owned a 14.4 Ryobi Cordless drill for year, but became increasingly disatisified with short battery life, and also the inability of the chuck to hold the bits securely.

Although I am just a "home-owner", I do appreciate good tools and the Makita Mforce is top notch. Good Balance, the chucks grabs the bits correctly. The 2 speed drive along with a easy feel to the speed lever makes a controbable tool with just the right feel and control. The extra dollars is well worth it, as now I have a tool that will last for many many years, and most importantly is a pleasure to use. You know.. priceless.

follow up: july 15, 2009.. Sadly accidentally dumped this great tool into salt water, and it actually ran for awhile, but the salt took its toll. Will have to get another
Awsome

I purchased this drill about three months ago and I have been using it almost daily on various home improvement projects. I have owned two lesser brand drills in the past and this time I went for the best. The perfomance of this drill is so much better than those cheaper brands it's amazing. The battery life is outstanding along with power and torque of the drill. I have also used serveral Dewalt cordless drills and find the performance of the Makita superior. This drill is a winner.

I'm a homeowner and occasional DIYer. I do appreciate a good tool and splurged on a previous version of this drill 3 years ago when I needed a cordless. It has been a workhorse... it handles all of those "around the house" tasks without breaking a sweat. It's lightweight enough to be very handy to just grab and use, and laughs at my typical jobs- hanging stuff on walls, putting Ikea furniture together.

The controls are really well designed- the direction switch is in easy finger reach, but never gets in the way. The gear shift is on top and thus easy to see, reducing the number of "oops" moments. The speed control is very precise and easy to fine-tune, and the drill stops instantly when you let go of the trigger. The body is narrow enough to fit in tight spots, and the thing is light enough to hold and control at arm's length without being a weightlifter.

But I came to have a new appreciation of it last weekend when I was replacing the decking on our back deck with Trex composite lumber... I used this drill to pre-drill and drive all of the screws for a 300 sq. ft deck. The power was plenty sufficient, and the excellent batteries were able to keep up with me- by the time I ran one out, the other was charged and ready to go- I was doing the cutting and carrying the lumber too, so it got regular breaks. The battery life was still excellent after three years of neglect- being left uncharged for long periods of disuse, or alternately staying in the charger for weeks at a time. I had only rarely done a "full cycle", and yet I felt like all the power was still here.

Anyway, I've been really, really pleased- unless you're a pro that *really* needs a lot of power and run-time, don't be seduced by higher-voltage drills- this is likely to match the endurance and needs of even a relatively serious DIYer, and you'll have something a lot lighter and nimbler than one of those monsters.

As an owner of a small business, I am always looking for the best tools. Makita tools have never let me down over the past 10 years of business. This drill is no different. The balance and weight are proportional to reduce fatigue while drilling. Using the keyless chuck requires little hand torque to secure the bit, one of the best chucks I have ever used. These batteries provide the power for both drills that I use and a flashlight with power to spare. Recently, while building a deck using 3" deck and lag screws, I had to charge every 2-3 hours while rotating to another battery. I couldn't have asked for any better performance. GREAT TOOL!
