Handy for the Home

Review Date: January 29, 2010
Reviewer: Steven Sprunger, Cincinnati, OH United States
I am a real estate investor and during the rehab process I am around a lot of tools. While my partner and I have a lot of heavy duty tools to use at our project sites, I needed something for the home for smaller projects that would be convenient and comfortable for my wife and daughter to use. The Black and Decker pivot driver has been the perfect addition to my home. It is easy to use and reliable. I have taken it to project sites on occasion and it performs admirably and its small size and pivot action is an asset. I would highly recommend this product to both the homeowner and professional for it size, quality and ability to get the job done.
Great Little Electric Screwdriver

Review Date: January 30, 2010
Reviewer: Space Queen, Mustang, OK
I gave this electric screwdriver to my father for Christmas. He is "very pleased" with the product. It has adequate power for an electric screwdriver, and has impressive battery staying power. He was able to screw doorknobs onto all the doors of his church building on a single charge.

This screwdriver fits easily into one's hand. The ergonomics are improved over some earlier models, which don't quite reach a 90 degree angle between the screwdriver and handle portions. But for really tight spots, you can still straighten it from the 90 degree to the 180 degree position.

Like other Black and Decker screwdrivers, there is a light to help you see what you are doing. And like most other Black and Decker products, this little tool seems to be made well. Overall, I recommend it as a purchase for yourself or for a gift for the handy person in your life.
Not bad for the price

Review Date: December 17, 2009
Reviewer: L. XIAO, Cerritos, CA, USA
I have a couple of other electric screw drivers, but this is probably the one I use most often, the reason is simple, it's powerful enough to get most jobs done and it's light and compact which make it easier to carry around than others. I particularly like its flashlight feature, ideal in not-so-well-lit environment, such as my garage.
Low End Driver that Works

Review Date: December 1, 2009
Reviewer: K. Schultz, USA
Screwdrivers come in many shapes and forms. For construction, I love using a corded unit for pure power. However, it is too bulky for simple household tasks. That is where these little tools come into play, but even within this category there are some choices - traditional battery units like this one on the low end and smaller lithium ion tools on the high end.

As a low end device with a price to match, my expectations were pretty low. I've had a tool like this before and it really couldn't handle much. As expected, there is only one speed, which is okay. It shouldn't be powerful enough to strip most screws, though it might break an outlet faceplate if you are not careful. Compared to other cheap drivers, this is actually pretty powerful amd left me pleasantly surprised.

Two gimmicks are included. One is a small led light that shines on the area you are working with. I found this very useful and a great inclusion is the ability to just scope out the area with the light without turning on the driver. The second gimmick is the pivot-action, which changes the driver from a pistol grip to a more traditional elongated shape. Ideally, this allows it to be used in tighter spaces. The pivoting works fine, but I find the driver a bit bulky regardless and I doubt there are many situations in which the elongated form would be needed.

Overall, this is a low end tool at a low end price. I have been quite happy with it and, presuming the battery doesn't die prematurely, would recommend it to the casual user.
Great screwdriver

Review Date: December 17, 2009
Reviewer: Ask Bjørn Hansen, Los Angeles, CA, United States
I use this in the datacenter and in the office when we need to replace parts in our servers. It's a good nice; easy to handle and yet strong enough for the occasional way too tight screw.

It's nice how it can be either straight or "drill shaped".

Only complaint is that B&D seems to have different power supplies for all their products, so you have to be careful to keep them matched up.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST IN A COMPETATIVE MARKET

Review Date: April 6, 2004
Reviewer: ,
I've had the older model of this drill with the NiMH batteries for several years. It was my second Panasonic. Previous one was the 14.4 volt, and I used it so much the batteries wore out, but not the drill. I've had Bosch (chuck wobbles), Porter-Cable (poor quality), and Milwaukee (great, but trigger pinches your fingers), etc. Panasonic is the best by far.

Pros: chuck holds even the smallest bit, excellent balance, really durable, light but powerful enough that if you need more get a drill with a cord or an impact driver. If I had to do it again, I'd go with this Ni-Cad model because it holds a charge longer than the NiMH and is cheaper, although the run time is less.

Cons: None

Truly worth 5 stars!

Review Date: August 12, 2005
Reviewer: Scott, Buffalo, NY
This drill is awesome at any price range, let alone $120! Lightweight, powerful, small, and good looking. You can feel the quality just by holding it. The only thing I didn't like about this vs. the Milwaukee is that the trigger is not as rubberized in feel, but that's a minor gripe. On the contrary, it doesn't pinch your fingers like the Milwaukee is sometimes prone to do so I'll take that tradeoff. Also, I read many reviews that this drill ramps up in speed too quickly as the trigger is depressed; however, I have not found it to be a problem. The trigger provides plenty of control of the drill. I bought the one with the NI-CD batteries because they are cheaper and also much more versatile vs. the NIMH. NIMH are designed to work best at room temperature, they lose their charge without use after a few weeks, and they wear out quicker despite costing more. NI-CD work in a wider temperature range, hold their charge better, and don't wear out as fast. They can develop "memory" but so what, just use them as instructed: let them fully deplete charge and then fully charge each time and no problems.
Panasonic 12 Volt drill

Review Date: September 30, 2005
Reviewer: A. Reuther, Long Island, NY USA
After reviewing previous posts on this website, I ordered the Panasonic EY6405FQKW 12 volt drill/driver kit. I was everything that was promised: compact size/quick charge batteries/one handed chuck. This drill is perfect for light to medium household chores. Plus I didn't want to spend in the $200 range. Looking at "entry level" drill kits at Sears, HomeDepot, etc, the bottom price drills all eventually turn out to be deficent...either poor quality or poor design (chucks that don't tighen... By spending a little more at Amazon I got a great drill at a good price. Go for it.
Excellent Cordless Drill

Review Date: November 9, 2005
Reviewer: Canh Tran, Newington, CT USA
I purchased this drill based good reviews and it's an excellent drill. I bought it to do the work on my basement and with 2 batteries coming with the package is a big plus. I never had to stop for charging (one is used and the other is fully charged). The drill has lots of power for my need.

The Panasonic brand for drill was new to me. I always think of DeWalt, Makita, Craftsman, Stanley, etc. when it comes to tool because neither Home Depot nor Lowe's carry Panasonic's tool.

Again, excellent drill. Highly recommended.
Stop looking... You've found the right drill.

Panasonic has made a terrific drill. I bought this one based on the reviews and was suprised to find that it exceeded my expectations. The drill is quiet, powerfull and the battery life is excellent. It comes with a great charger with a full indicator and an extra battery. This is definately worth the money!

Powered by a long-lasting 1.5Ah lithium ion slide battery, the Hitachi DS18DSAL 18-Volt Compact Pro Lithium Ion Drill/Driver packs a powerful punch. Efficient and easy to handle, this variable-speed tool provides professional power in the most compact, lightweight, and ergonomically designed body currently available. For added convenience, it comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL Lithium Ion Flashlight.

The powerful DS18DSAL features eco-friendly Lithium Ion batteries and a comfortable grip.View Larger.

At only 3.5 pounds, the compact frame is well-suited for overhead work.View Larger.

The clutch has twenty-two driving stages, allowing you control over torque and precision.View Larger.

The kit comes with a flashlight, battery charger, Phillips Driver Bit and carrying case.View Larger.
Compact Design Minimizes User Fatigue Without Sacrificing Performance
The first in Hitachi's compact Pro Series of cordless tools, the DS18DSALmeasures only 7.7 inches in length and weighs 3.5 pounds, making it easy to hold and use all day without stress or strain. The compact design also provides the power and performance of a pro-grade 18-volt tool, making operation as efficient and dependable as it is comfortable.

Variable Speed and 22-Stage Clutch for Versatility
This impressive driver drill features a variable speed trigger to set speed from zero to 350 RPM or zero to 1,500 RPM so you always match the right speed to the job. Additionally, the clutch has 22 driving stages and a special mode for drilling, allowing for both high torque applications and precision driving.

First-in-its-Class Torque for Heavy-Duty Jobs
With unmatched torque in its class, the DS18DSAL powers through even the toughest jobs. 460 in./lbs. of torque gives this easy-to-handle model the necessary boost to take on hardwoods, masonry, and other heavy-duty drilling.

Belt Hook, LED Light, and 1/2-Inch Ratcheting Chuck for User-Friendly Operation
The DS18DSAL comes with a convenient metal belt hook and an LED job light to illuminate your work surface. It also features a keyless 1/2-inch ratcheting metal chuck that accepts a wide variety of bits, giving you greater flexibility. Finally, externally accessible carbon brushes allow you to easily and economically replace the brushes when they are worn, thus ensuring longer tool life.

Lightweight 1.5 Ah Lithium Ion Slide Battery for Long-Lasting Power
This driver drill is powered by a long-lasting 1.5 Ah lithium ion slide battery. Designed without the vertical chamber of a post-style battery, this battery glides easily into place and allows the DS18DSAL to have an ergonomic handle. And because this Lithium Ion battery weighs roughly half as much as a NiCd or NiMH battery, you can work longer, with better accuracy.

Steady Stream of Power for Precision and Consistency
As with all of Hitachi's lithium ion batteries, the tool receives a steady stream of power for the duration of every battery charge, from the moment the trigger is pulled until the charge cycle is exhausted. And with up to three times the number of charge cycles of traditional batteries, you won't have to waste money on costly replacements.

Included Lithium Ion Flashlight for Added Flexibility
As a bonus, the DS18DSAL comes with Hitachi's UB18DAL Lithium Ion Flashlight. Adjustable to five lighting positions, this flashlight stands alone while you work and can be aimed where you need illumination. A shoulder strap makes for easy, comfortable carrying, and a low-battery indicator light helps ensure that you don't run out of power mid-use. And because the UB18DAL runs on the same 18-volt slide batteries as the driver drill, it shares the same lithium ion benefits of long battery life, lasting power per charge, and lightweight convenience.

Warranty Information
For even more value and peace of mind, each of these tools is covered by Hitachi's 10-year lithium ion tool warranty and two-year lithium ion battery warranty.

460 lbs of Torque? ....You Bet!!!!

Review Date: September 4, 2009
Reviewer: Marvin Cohn, San Antonio, TX
My rating of five stars is actually a solid four stars in order to help make up for the undeserved two-star rating, which one reviewer gave.

I did a lot of research before buying this drill. It is well balanced, easy to control, and will drive just about any screw into anything and do it for a long, long time on each battery. It is a powerhouse with more torque (460 lbs.) for the buck than any other drill in its class. I have found that, for me, two 1.5 amp-hour batteries are better than one 3.0 amp-hour battery (which is available) in that the smaller battery is much lighter; and if you are working with the drill all day long, you will appreciate not having to carry around the extra weight. The 1.5 ah battery charges in less than half an hour (not in 15 minutes as claimed), so you are always ready to go.

However, there are a few minor cons: 1) No drill bit holder (You can install one yourself...I prefer a magnet.) 2) The kit comes with a useless flashlight, not even l.e.d. It would have been better to have added a few doo-dads to the drill, such as a level, instead of wasting the money on a flashlight. 3) No battery meter. 4) Comes with a belt holder, which is very sturdy; but I wouldn't trust what one might hang it on to...and then there is always the possibility of drilling a hole in your leg. I removed it. 5) The case for the kit measures 16" x 18" x 4" and would do justice as designer luggage or as an overnight airline carry-on ...another waste; and when was the last time you lugged around (or even kept) your work drill in its case? However, it is recyclable. 6) The charging light on the bare-bones charger is recessed in the top of the charger and can only be viewed by looking down on it. The charger also has a rather cryptic light readout.

With all these complaints, I wouldn't trade it for any of the other 9 drills (for under $200) I tried out. Why? It outperformed every one of them.

For the past two weeks, we have been reconstructing a small country house. I included the Hitachi and a good corded drill (just in case)in my tool kit. So far, I have yet to plug in the corded drill.
great drill...

THIS DRILL IS AWSOME I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE LAST REVIEW BUT I TOTALLY DISAGREE THIS DRILL HANDLES GREAT I USE IT FOR MASONARY DRILLING WICH IS CONCRETE AND IT WORKS AWSOME I'VE HAD IT FOR MORE THAN 3 MONTHS NOW AND IT IS STILL RUNNING STRONG THE LIFE IN THE BATTERIES ARE INCREADIBLE THEY SEEM TO LAST FOREVER I KNOW DRILLING THROUGH MASONARY HAS GOT TO BE TOUGHER THAN OAK AND THATS WHY I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH THE LAST REVIEW ALL I COULD SAY IS THAT FOR AS SMALL AND AS LIGHT AS IT IS BOY DOES IT PACK SOME POWER...

Reviewer: Patrick McDonough,
Bought 2 weeks ago, did projects around house, it is a powerful cordless drill, feels good in your hand, and I like the light. Batteries came with a charge, but topped them off, ready to go. Own a Panasonic 15.4 volt which I love, batteries went bad, new ones were $83.00, decided to try the Hitachi with the lithium ion for the price of two panasonic nicad batteries....so far so good.

Weight and Balance

Review Date: March 30, 2009
Reviewer: Cary Secrest, Bethesda, MD
This tool is my first foray into the world of Hitachi. What attracted me most is the feel of the grip and the way the tool doesn't cant forward or backward very much when using it. It's well-balanced, and the motor housing is short which is helpful in tight spaces. The design is different from most other drills. The battery doesn't project into the handle, but instead, slides in like a sled. I do like the "press and drop" battery design of other tools, but this "press and slide" design is easy to get used to. The clutch settings do seem a bit lighter than other drills, but on the other hand, the lighter settings on the drill are very nice for doing delicate work like setting #6 pan head screws to 1/8-inch oak plywood without imbedding the pan into the plywood. I haven't tried driving #10 screws into oak without a pilot hole. Personally, I like to drill a pilot in hardwoods so I don't risk breaking the head off of the screw. A #10 of any length will go in hardwood just fine with a pilot hole drilled first.

Positives: light weight, small for tight spaces, ergonomic, lithium ion batteries, ease of drill bit lock-up in the chuck, LED work light, and a very nice carrying case.

Minus(?). My only concern is to echo a previous review...I had no idea when I bought the tool that it is the only one Hitachi makes at this time with this battery design. It is new. Though lithium ion batteries last a long time and they have no charge "memory," at some point (1,000 charge cycles or so) they need to be replaced. It would be more comforting if the battery was universal to the product line.

One more thing...why the flashlight? The carrying case could be made smaller without it.

Easy to use

Review Date: March 27, 2006
Reviewer: Bruce Cuningham, Dixon, CA USA
I've been using this set for 6 or 7 years now, on a variety of woodworking and home improvement projects. Beyond tightening up the allen screws every now and then, and replacing bits and phillips heads, this product has exceeded my expectations. To be brief, it's sturdy, compact, works as advertised, and is easy to use. Flipping from drilling to screwing is a snap--really, just slide the snap ring up, rotate the bit, snap the ring down and you're ready to go.

The drill bits are a little specialized, since they have a flat spot to set the allen screw against so it won't spin in place. I found a local distributor who was more than happy to sell me a couple sets of three bits in the sizes I wear out fastest (#6 and #8).

Go ahead and buy this product, you won't be disappointed.
Money well spent.

Review Date: December 17, 2003
Reviewer: ,
After reading all the negatives. I had to give my opinion. The drill driver set is one of the best tools I have ever purchased. I've been a carpenter for over twenty years and I've spent a lot of money on tools. Good and bad. Whether your working in the shop or your building a deck in the backyard. This tool makes the job easier. You drill and counter sink the hole at the same time, flip the driver around and drive in the screw.
The shaft that fits in the drill has a locking collar, when you flip the driver around it locks in place and will not come out until you unlock it. The only problem I have with the tool is the shaft will occasionally fill up with saw dust and the collar will not lock. All you have to do is tap your drill and problem solved. This tool was well thought out, there is an allen key built in the end of the shaft. You can change your bits and screw tips right on the spot. They even give you extra drill bits and extra allen screws. $37.00 does seem to be a little high, I paid $29.00 a couple years ago at Woodworker's Warehouse. Buy the set it's money well spent.

I've owned my set for over 6 years and have gotten more than my money's worth from the set. The number of times I've had to start my pilot hole and then set the screw goes on and on. With this, it's so simple to start my hole, flip the bit and set the screw. After 6 years, one of the bits stopped snapping back into place cleanly. However, there are 3 other bits in the set and I switched to one of the 3 remaining and things are fine.

The only negative that I've had with this is that it extends the length of the drill out about another 2 to 3 inches. When I'm doing tight work in cabinets, it gets a bit challenging to use. Other than that, it's the only bit I always keep with my drill.
Met my expectations

You get what you pay for! These flip drill/drivers fit snugly and opperate precisely. After trying a cheep, no name, set shipped from the UK, I found these Makitas to be quality tools. They are easy to adjust and help me do the job quickly. Plenty of extra bits. Glad I found these.
Great item

Great drill for the price

Review Date: December 17, 2008
Reviewer: c3o7l4,
This drill is a great value for someone who uses it twice a month or less.
I found this locally for about $20. It has great features for the price: cordless, 2-speed (325/650rpm), reversing (to drive screws) and a keyless chuck. The quality is quite good, considering the price. It's well balanced, and seems to have a good amount of power. It's stated capacity is a 1/2" in wood, and 3/8" in steel. The battery pack is built inside. It uses 4/5 sub-C ni-cd cells. The shelf life of rechargeables is about
3 months, so you will need to charge it occassionally.
good stuff

Good buy. Does not come with bits and drill heads. Luckily I had a set from my old drill.
I did find this one cheaper in Walmart later, but oh well.
I built all the furniture in my new apartment with this guy. Thank goodness I had it.
Powerful enough for the job w/o being too heavy to lug around. Charges just fine.
Great Little Drill

I received this BLACK & DECKER 7.2-VOLT CORDLESS DRILL for Christmas. I've been looking for a cordless drill for about nine months and had been looking at drills that were a bit larger and more powerful. However, even though this drill isn't quite what I was looking for, it's an exceptional drill. It has two speeds (325 & 650 rpm), can go in reverse, and the chuck is keyless. It's a very easy drill to use and is fairly light weight. The battery pack is built inside the drill and in order to charge it, you have to plug the charger into a socket on the drill. I've used this drill several times since receiving it and have not had any problems. In fact, the only criticism I have is that the drill doesn't include any drill bits or heads; you have to purchase a set of drill bits and heads separately. Overall, this is a great drill for someone who is a novice to beginning home repair type person. It'll also do a job for more experience handymen who are in the pinch.
FOR THE PRICE - A GREAT DRILL

For a non-professional occasional around the house cordless drill and screw driver .... It's great. Don't use it often, but when I do, it has held a good charge and works flawlessly.
Top Heavy - but works great

This drill is fine except for the fact that it won't stand up - it topples right over. Obviously the person who designed this never thought of the convenience of a drill that can stand on a counter without toppling off. Works great, price is right but remember that you have to lay this drill on its side or you are going to quickly hear a crash!

This is my second drill like this, it feels hefty in the hand, has great toque and is easy to control. The lite is usefull. One small improvement would be some system of storing several bits on the unit, but overall a good drill.

I never thought i would buy a cordless hammer drill because there is no way they could produce enough power to get the job done. Well i was wrong about that. I drilled right through concrete like it was butter. My only complaint is i would still like a little longer battery life but that is lot to ask for when drilling through concrete for hours on end.
Hammer action is best aspect of drill's performance

Review Date: June 24, 2010
Reviewer: Michael Winters,
Bare drills are not a bad way to go if you already have one of the manufacturer's kits with a compatible charger and don't like to use a hard shell case to carry your drill around. The full size batteries are not cheap but you can buy just what you need. We learned our lesson and would never buy the Makita "reconditioned" drills but the bare-tools are good buy.

I like the overall feel and fit of the full size Makita drills and for hammer action having the depth control rod intergrated into the handle is really a cool design. The depth rod is something provided on some of the Bosch hammer drills but none of the ones from Milwaukee or DeWalt. The side handle has the best design of any drill. The side handle can be anywhere around the drill head (like the DeWalt design and unlike Milwaukee and Ridgid) and it is easy to tighten for a snug fit that won't slip and yet is easy to loosen and adjust. Most of the time I find that the 90 degree straight out position of the side handle provides the least control over the drill so I like the Makita and DeWalt approach where I can place it so it will do the most good depending upon the situation.

Makita batteries charge very fast but are supposed to have a half-hour minimum cool down time. You can ignore this but as the Makita have a short 1-year warranty on their batteries I prefer to wait the extra time and hope to have longer battery life.

Unlike older Makita drills I have this one has vent holes in the back that are easy to accidentally cover with your second hand as when trying to help a bi-metal hole saw make its way through a board. Why Makita took a good design and changed it to this is a mystery but something to watch when using the drill.

The clutch action is smooth and changing from low to high range takes little effort. Important with the Makita gearbox not to overdrive it by using it in its high speed setting on tough drilling tasks. Lots of problems with Makita gearboxes failing and it is partly the design of the gearbox and partly the misuse of the tool by people not will to drive the drill at 450 RPM.

You can do yourself and your drill a favor by using efficient hole cutters and the larger the hole you are cutting the greater the advantages. We use the Blue Boar stucco hole cutters and their large gullet carbide hole cutters and not only save a lot of time, we get many more holes from each battery and we don't beat the drills up nearly as much - and did I mention we save a lot of time.

For most hole cutting operations the larger hole cutters work best at around 1000 RPM where there is more momentum when the tips strike something hard. Very few drills have a gearing selection for this speed range but if you want the best performance these drills make a big difference. The Makita's top out at 1500 RPM compared to 1700-2100 for competitors drills. Where this makes a difference is when we are drilling through metal, though we benefit even more by using cobalt drills instead of high speed steel ones.

Excellent example of the new generation of high performance hole cutters are the Blue Boar carbide hole saws from Hole Pro. Highly recommended. Their motto is Built For Speed and it is no exaggeration.

BLUE BOAR TUH14 - 14 Piece Super Duty Tungsten Carbide Hole Saw kit - 2-3/8"Cut Depth. Cut 10x as fast and use 1/40th battery charge. Cordless Drills can cut holes 3x as large as with bi-metal hole saws. Deep side gullets for fast plug removal

Two thirds of the problems I see people having with their hand drills comes from using them incorrectly or with the wrong hole cutters or drill bits. Drill manufacturers with their universally skimpy manuals don't help either and they really should provide some guidance on how to get the most out of their tools. It would help their customers and most likely reduce the amount of warranty repairs they have to handle as well.

The new Hitachi WR18DL Cordless 1/2-inch Square-Drive Impact Wrench is compact and lightweight at only 6-5/8 inches long and 3-1/2 pounds. But don't be fooled by its size and sleek styling. This is a powerful nut-busting, bolt-rattling pro-duty tool that's fueled by a never-say-die 18-volt lithium-ion battery.

The two-speed tool can be used in Power Mode (zero to 2,600 rpm) for full-speed applications, or in Save Mode (zero to 2,000 rpm), which provides greater control.

The square-drive chuck accepts all 1/2-inch sockets. The tool features Hitachi's unique Cool Flow system that delivers a steady stream of air to the motor, allowing the wrench to run longer without risk of burnout. It also has a replaceable carbon brush, and five-position belt hook that has a built-in LED work light. The WR18DL is covered by Hitachi's industry-leading five-year warranty.

One of the best impacts on the market

Review Date: November 25, 2007
Reviewer: James L. Wilcox IV, Chicago, IL USA
I install garage doors, and my impact wrench is my number one weapon. I have owned a 14.4 Milwaukee, 14.4 DeWalt, 18v DeWalt, and now this one. I had to send the Milwaukee back numerous times because of it's poor build quality. I have had motors die on the DeWalt due to its poor cooling design. There are small plastic fins in the motor which move air and keep the motor cool, and they have broken of on every DeWalt impact I have owned. I have been using the Hitachi for more than 4 months without a problem. I look actually look forward to using it. The battery stays secured to the drill, even after a four five foot fall. I laughed at the little light it comes with at first, but it has come in handy in dark garages. The torque is strong enough to pull the lug nuts of a wheel hub, and the battery life is stellar. One battery will get me through multiple double sized garage door installs. The DeWalt would kill at least too full batteries in only one install. It's safe to say that one Hitachi lithium-ion batter = 3+ DeWalt NiCads.

Another reviewer has mentioned a bad smell from the motor. All my impacts, drills, saws, and other power tools have gave off burning odor during the break-in of the tool. This is normal.

One other component of the impact which I enjoy is the pin. Unlike the DeWalt, the pin is designed to keep the socket secure when the pin of the impact is in line with the hole of the socket. The socket WILL come off of the impact with a little force unlike the DeWalt. With the DeWalt, the pin had to be compressed with a nail or screw in order to remove the socket.

To sum this review up... Buy the Hitachi.

I am a Hitachi fan converted over from Makita. I use this Hitachi WR18DL 18-volt Cordless Impact Wrench to change flat tires on my 2 construction trailers. This Hitachi takes the drudgery out of changing flat tires.
Now I am also using it instead of my air impact wrench around my shop, etc. etc. NO AIR HOSES NEEDED.

Reviewer: W. DeVercelly, Northern New Jersey
Got the WR18DL today and it promptly took a lug nut that was torqued to 80ft/lb off my Maxima - in about 5 seconds. I plan on keeping this lightweight bulldog in my trunk at all times for just that purpose.

One thing about Hitachi Li-Ion tools that gets overlooked is their battery technology. All Li-Ion batteries are not alike! Hitachi uses the same nano-phosphate formula that DeWalt uses. This technology allows the cycle-life of these batteries to be tripled over the standard manganese (Milwaukee and pretty much everyone else uses this) to 1000-1500 cycles. Manganese Li-Ion only lasts 300-500 cycles - same as NiCd and NiMH. You will need new batteries a lot less often with Hitachi and DeWalt as a result.

I really wish that Ryobi would adapt their One+ impact driver to a wrench because I have their 18V Li-Ion battery, but they didn't - yet. Since Ryobi uses manganese Li-Ion, this is no great hardship. Hitachi sells many bare tools that can use these batteries, so while it's not as versatile as the One+ system, it's the next best thing - with better batteries!

If you're taking big rig tires off, go for the Snap-On CT4850, but anything shy of that can be done at half the price and half the weight by the WR18DL - (again) with better batteries!

Lovin' it.

Don't let the size of this tool trick you. This fanstastic little powerhouse removes the wheel lugs on my trailer and SUVs rapidly. The specs say it's only 1950in-pounds, or 162ft-pounds. It seems to have this plus some. For seriously stubborn tasks, a large and heavy electric may be necessary or a pneumatic impact for the ultimate torque, but for 98% of what I do messing with my Jeeps and lawn tractor blade changing etc, this is a super convenient, small, lightweight powerhouse... (and I don't have to move my compressor, or run super long air lines to my work.)

I shopped for a long time before buying this. There are heavier impacts... Ingersol Rand makes a great cordless with Lithium batteries at 350 ft-pounds. It's $400 w/ two batteries. The Dewalt cordless impact has 300 ft-pounds at $299, but it continues to use the outdated Nicad batteries..in the heat where I live, these fail rapidly and you spend a fortune replacing them every year. I looked at more powerful plug-ins, all above the $150 range have great torque (like the Dewalt:340 ft-pounds at $179), but you'll have to run that power cord to your task. And, most of these tools are HEAVY.

My plan is to use this lightweight powerhouse for most of my chores, and when I need super torque, either hit the task with a 24 inch breaker bar, or breakdown and get a corded electric. If your wheel lugs are not seriously coroded and neglected, this tool seems to have the muscle to take them off. It's so small, it's almost fun to see this tool remove the lugs so easily!
Best cordless tool since the drill

Great 12Volt Drill

Review Date: August 17, 2009
Reviewer: Doug Blackwell, Clare, MI USA
While I admit that I was a little concerned about the compact design of this drill, I was glad to give it a try in light of Amazon's return policy. However, this drill is not going anywhere. Like many other cordless drill owners I got to that place where purchasing replacement batteries was almost as much as purchasing a new drill with two batteries. I used it to for driving some 3.5" framing screws and drywalled a bathroom, laundry room, and small hallway. It has plenty of power and balances well in the hand. The LED light is also a nice enhancement for dark corners in tight workplaces.
No surprises

It meets all expectations. Nothing significant will disappoint you with one caveat. There is a small light that comes on when the trigger is slightly depressed. It does not light the tip area of the driver as it should. The chuck casts a shadow exactly where you need the light. I seldom need the light but when I do it isn't there. It may work better if you can use an extension. If the light is important to you it will be your only disappointment.
Good drill, good price

Well balanced and nice weight at 3.8 pounds, it is only 7 ounces heavier than the 9.6V it replaced (probably 10 years old). Work light is useful. Love the chuck. My old 9.6V Dewalt was 'grip strength' and I sometimes didn't crank it enough such that it would open if I reversed and there was tension on the bit in the wood. The new models have a ratchet chuck that is easy to tighten.

The 12V cost little more than 2 new batteries for the 9.6V it replaced and it came with 2 batteries, not a difficult decision to get the 12V. In fact, two 9.6V batteries cost 10% MORE than a new 9.6V drill WITH 2 batteries. Go figure. The Dewalt chargers are 'interchangeable'. Multiple voltages (7.2 to 18V) and the batteries for the 12V have the same 'plug' configuration as the old 9.6V so I have 2 batteries AND two chargers.

This drill has only 1 'holder' for screwdriver bits. Not a big deal, but I did like the "one on either side" bit storage on the 9.6V.
Weight to power is amazing

Iv owned this drill for over 6 years if your looking for a drill that can do all your household needs look no further. I know its not an 18v like everyone raves about. but its light and well balanced. I dropped it many time. Iv drilled thou hardened steel with 3/8 bits and its never failed me yet. Its been a great companion iv used allot of 18v before and this thing is much eraser on the arm. of course more battery swamping but after completing a deck a few swaps is no big deal if your arm is not tired. Other thoughts i have a 14.4 hammer dewalt for larger jobs again that thing and do anything an 18v can do. just has less weight and of course shorter battery life. but again well worth it. lagging an 18v around is just stupidity if you don't need it for the job.
This drill is perfect for my needs. Small yet powerful!

I have had a DeWalt drill for some time. I really like the chuck design which makes placing a drill bit or screw driver bit easy and almost a one-handed operation. The stop when power is shut off is a nice touch as well. The rugged good looks and attractive design seem to be just right. This new drill is smaller in size but just as powerful as my last DeWalt drill. My son now has my first drill and I have the new smaller version.

About Makita's 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless Tool Series
As one of the pioneers driving the cordless tool revolution, Makita changed the game with its breakthrough 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless series. Three years after its debut, Makita's LXT series has grown from seven to over 35 tools, providing a wide range of cordless solutions for professional tradesmen. Makita also added 18-volt compact lithium-ion for cordless power in a more compact size. Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion batteries and ENERGY-STAR rated Optimum Charging System provide several benefits over old battery technology. When compared to traditional 18-volt NiCd batteries, Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion batteries have 40% less weight, longer run time, and five times lower self-discharge to keep cells active and ready to use at any time.

Makita's 18-volt lithium-ion battery delivers 2,000 cycles--2.5 times more than NiCd. In addition, built-in shock absorbing features help protect the battery, and 16 firm-holding contact terminals deliver constant high power. During the charging process, a built-in memory chip in the battery communicates with the Optimum Charger for a more efficient charge, extending the battery life. Makita's Optimum Charger is also faster: it will charge an 18-volt LXT lithium-ion battery in just 30 minutes, and an 18-volt compact lithium-ion battery in only 15 minutes. Makita also offers a Rapid Automotive Charger for 18-volt LXT and 18-volt compact lithium-ion batteries that plugs into 12-volt DC sockets equipped in most automobiles and trucks for added mobility. Makita's growing line of LXT cordless tool solutions features a wide range of industrial-quality power tools, including driver-drills, impact drivers, impact wrenches, saws, grinders, screwguns, rotary hammers, and more.
