This is my 3rd 14.4 volt drill, 3rd generation has really improved. The shorter body allows me to work in tighter areas. I origionally thought the led was a joke but I have noticed that the led light has been pretty handy as I have used it in areas with low lighting, it does work. I was also pretty impressed with the speedy battery charge time. It's nice to see that dewalt has stayed with the same battery configuration since my first drill back 10-15 yrs ago.

Excellent product...I would recommend this to anyone looking for a drill. I had a Ryobi cordless drill prior to purchasing this and after 7 years it finally died. As a result of using Dewalt drills owned by friends, I thought I would purchase one myself. This drill exceeded my expectations greatly. I loved my Ryobi drill and did not want to let it go but glad that I made this purchase instead of another Ryobi...

Have always had a 14 volt DeWalt. No need for the 18, too heavy. Wore my 14 out so I ordered this one. Delivered fast and used it almost immediately. Can't beat the price, especially with the case and two batteries and charger. Remember to charge the batteries first.

GREAT drill!

Review Date: July 29, 2009
Reviewer: Method2Madness, Hampton Roads, VA
I have this kit along with the Makita BDF452HW kit and love them both to pieces. Both are solid performers in every sense of the word and are very light as well. I have worked the crap out of both of them and they just keep asking for more. You simply cannot go wrong with either of these drills.

That being said the only difference between this kit (BDF452) and the BDF452HW is the color(white vs blue), the plastic grip around the chuck, and the batteries. The BDF452HW includes 1.5 ampere hour batteries, where this kit includes the 3.0ah batteries, offering twice the runtime. If you can deal with a shorter, but still surprisingly good, runtime, you can save about $100 and go with the BDF452HW.

Either way, expect a great tool that should last for many years to come.

(PS- There were those who had battery issues, but apparently Makita has worked them out, as I have 8 Makita LiOn power tools for over a year and have had no issues whatsoever with battery longevity.)
Saweeet!

I am DIYer and take on everything from basement finishing to roof rebuilding. I build decks for neighbors and remodel kitchens for friends and their friends. I demand a lot from my tools and tend to do lot's of research when buying them. I replaced a Panasonic 6450 with this drill. The Panasonic was an awesome drill and it's replacement was to have a very high bar to clear. I can say this drill sets a new standard. It has performed to the same level as the Panasonic, but it is both lighter and shorter, (the two features that influenced my decision) The batteries charge quicker, but this is just an observation since I never ran into the problem of having both batteries out of juice with the Panasonic. The next battery was always waiting before I could run the out the other. Nothing has stood out to dislike with the Makita, and based on my experience with Makita and the drill so far I give it full marks.
Wow major power

Wow this drill has major power. Light weight and the battery last forever. I used it to drill a 5/8 inch by 18 inch long hole through my maple tree. the tree split and I inserted a 1/2 Inch threaded rod to hold it together.
limited 2-speed gearbox and low high speed RPM gearing

Review Date: June 2, 2010
Reviewer: Michael Winters,
Makita is supposed to be making a drill with a 3 speed gearbox but I have not been able to find one for sale anywhere so we bought this one to see how it would perform on the job. It is a typical Makita drill with a good feel and lighter weight than most drills in this power range. The torque is rated in the middle of the 400-500 inch pound range and with lithium drills I like this it is not enough to compensate for the overload protection and so the drill will lose power on difficult hole cutting jobs and it takes twice as long to cut the hole.

This is true even with the amazing Blue Boar high performance hole cutters we are now using unless we go slower than we would like to not overload the Makita. The drill has a good 450 RPM low range setting so the problem is with the overload protection of the lithium battery. The high speed RPM is 1500 which is not bad but it is noticeably slower than the 2000 RPM setting of other drills I have when I am drilling into metal. I have learned to grab another drill when I need to make a lot of holes in metal where the higher RPM makes a big difference.

The charger will recharge the battery quickly but Makita also says in the charger manual to leave the charged battery on the charger for an additional 30-60 minutes to give it time to cool off. From this I would gather that the charger is charging the lithium battery too quickly for Makita to warn against immediately starting to drill with the recharged battery.

The drill chuck is very smooth and it is easy to make adjustments. There is no side handle which puts this drill in the medium duty class for me. I use the side handle to control the drill and without it I find myself putting my second hand on the back of the drill to steady it and when I do this I cover the cooling vent holes for the motor. I have a 10 year old Makita NiCad drill and with it the vents were on the sides so I did not have to worry about covering them with my hand. Changing this design was not a good move on Makita's part.

I was having to make a lot of 2-1/2 inch holes in stucco siding and was using one of the Blue Boar TCT stucco bits to cut holes through the stucco, the metal lath, and the plywood sheets and started off using the Makita. I got more than 30 holes per battery charge which is pretty good. The 2-1/2" hole size was just outside the max size hole saw guide from Makita but the drill did not struggle.

BLUE BOAR 2-1/2" (64mm) Stucco-Brick & Wood Tungsten Carbide Tipped TCT Hole Saw with M16 Thread, requires mounting shank with M16 Thread and 10mm carbide pilot bit

I had a job where I was installing new decking and that was a good test of the Makita BDF452. It did not have the reserve power of the DeWalt DCD940 drill that I used to finish the job. I was driving 3 inch screws through pressure treated timbers that had a lot of moisture so I was not terribly surprised that the Makita was not providing as much power to the screw as the DeWalt but it did show how the 450 rating drills do not have just a little less power than the 550 to 650 rated drills but instead a lot less power when the going got tough.

DEWALT DCD940KX 18-Volt 1/2-Inch XRP Drill/Driver

To get the most out of this drill if you buy it be sure to use the gearbox and gear down for hard to drill or drive situations and the drill will last a lot longer. Most likely a lot of the complaints about gear box failure are from people who left the drill in its high speed setting and in effect abused the drill. The new generation of tungsten carbide hole cutters like the ones made by Blue Boar also will make the work go faster and help your drill and its batteries last longer. I stopped using high speed steel drill bits many years ago and switched to cobalt bits that make holes ten times as fast. I recently learned to do the same with large hole saws and have switched from the bi-metal hole saws to the tungsten carbide ones with large side slots for the same dramatic improvement in performance.
Good in its day but better choices available for less money

Reviewer: Bryan Sanders, Chicago
I bought one of these drill kits several years ago and used it a lot the first year as it was the only lithium-ion powered drill I could find and I loved the LED light which was a unique feature at that time. I was using it in place of a lightweight 3/8" cord drill and a Milwaukee 18 volt NiCad drill and the Makita was a big improvement over both. Since that time I have bought more than a dozen cordless drills for my business and almost all with lithium-ion batteries. When you can compare multiple drills with the same hole saws or screw driving work it becomes evident the strengths and weaknesses of each.

There is a very human tendency to personalize a purchase decision and identify with a product whether it is a make of car or a brand of soft drink or a power tool. I hear people say that Makita is the best or Milwaukee or DeWalt and I know they are not really credible as they have limited experience and a closed mind.

Makita definitely makes a good lightweight cordless drill but so do Ridgid, Milwaukee, Hitachi, and DeWalt. If you have a bunch of DeWalt or Makita batteries around and need a new power tool it makes perfect sense to stay with that manufacturer everything else being equal. But I have found big differences in real drill power and in chuck and gearbox performance between different brands and different models and Makita comes up in the middle of the pack with better performance and value from the drill kits made by DeWalt (DC760) and Milwaukee (2602).

The Makita chuck is not very good at gripping a hole cutter where there is any amount of vibration. The Makita positioning of the forward and reverse lever is too low and it is very easy to switch out of forward while depressing the trigger of the drill. This is not the case with the compact drills from Hitachi, Milwaukee, or DeWalt that I own and use, only the baby Makita BDF452. If you have small hands and never wear gloves this may not be a problem.

Makita batteries are charged quicker than most by the Makita charger but Makita also recommends in their charger guide that the batteries stay on the charger for an extra 30-60 minutes to cool down so total time is the same or longer than with other manufacturers' lithium-ion batteries.

The advantage of this version of the Makita BDF452 over the white model is the use of full size Makita batteries. This adds weight but also makes it possible to get the full power potential out of the drill. The 1.5 Ah batteries from Makita provide less than half the torque from the drill motor and quickly drain when cutting hard materials. This may not matter to you but it is something to consider before you buy as replacing the batteries from the white Makita kit is expensive.

Makita has a 1 year warranty on the batteries compared to 2 years with DeWalt. At the current price for replacement batteries any drill that is going to be used heavily will be cheaper to operate with the DeWalt drills and lithium-ion batteries.

As this is a 5 year old model it also has the 5 year old carry case that has lots of room for spare items but is pretty marginal at holding the batteries, even the half-size versions. Not a big deal but if you put a new Milwaukee drill case side by side with the Makita you will see that Milwaukee puts a lot more thought into the details (like the position of the forward-reverse switch).

For ultimate power I recommend the DeWalt DC760 18 volt drill that has lithium ion batteries that provide 20 volts of power. For a drill that performs well in every aspect I would not hesitate to buy the Milwaukee 2602 with the full size batteries so long as I did not care about possible shorter battery life and compatibility issues with new batteries in the future.

Regardless of which drill you buy the performance will be greatly improved if you keep the battery full charged after each use and are sure to use modern hole cutters and toss your bi-metal hole saws.

BLUE BOAR 2" (51mm) Super Duty Universal TCT 2-1/4" deep tungsten carbide hole saw cuts more materials faster than any other hole saw. Hard RA 90-91 carbide teeth for faster cutting and longer life, ultra deep side gullets for faster plug removal

Makita delivers again!

Review Date: January 11, 2009
Reviewer: E. Fuller, Newnan, GA USA
I am a new homeowner and have been trying to purchase quality tools for DIY projects. I'm not a Pro. I needed to drill through studs with very little clearance. This tool has enough torque to not only drill through one 2x4, but three sandwiched together! I had to do this a few times using a 3/4" self feed spade bit.

This has a delightfully low profile for getting in tight spaces. It seems to have plenty of speed and torque on tap. The speed is variable and with a light trigger pressure I had no problem driving screws. It does not have a speed selector switch which would make this task a bit easier.

If you notice, the kit version of this tool has two batteries. I can vouch for the need to have more than one. I already had two LXT batteries so I opted for the bare tool shown here. This is one of the most power hungry Makita tools I have (next to their LXT jigsaw). Seems to sap faster than my hammer drill.
Perfect Tool for the Job

I bought this drill mostly for drilling holes in studs to run wiring. It's been absolutely perfect. Very powerful, lightweight, fits into almost any space easily. The handle placement is a little awkward, but with the speed and power this drill can put out, you don't have to hold it for very long before you're done. One of the things I really love about the Makita LXT line is the slow-dimming LED. One tap on the trigger and the LED lights up and stays lit for a good 10 seconds, even without the tool running. This is a great feature I haven't seen on anyone else's tools. A light doesn't do you much good if it's only on when the tool is running. You need to be able to see where to PUT the tool before you fire it up, and Makita thought of that. I'm very pleased with this drill and I'm going to get a lot of use out of it.
Excellent Product!

The Makita Angle Drill provides plenty of power to drill holes through 2" by x studs. I already had the batteries from another Makita product so just needed the tool.

I'm an Audio/Video Installer which means I install all types of flat screen TVs, speakers, home theater systems, whole house audio, in residential and commercial properties. I have many MAKITA drills about 5. All for different purposes. Before buying this close quarter drill I considered the Milwaukee right angle drill. The Milwaukee is a great tool, just too large for my purposes. I needed something small, powerful and cordless. I climb in all kind of tight spots and sometimes a dangling cord can be a hazzard when working in a customer's home.

The Makita is solidly built, I like like the large trigger and it does the job. Makita should have supplied a rubber screw on handle it would minimize vibration. This thing does vibrate when drilling through a wooden stud. I also wish it had two speeds Slower speeds deliver more torque. If your driving screws or making small holes it works like a charm.

I bought the (tool only) because I have 3 (3amp Lithium ION batteries. Good tool. Sturdy and well built.

I'm pleased.

Product Description

Here's the perfect collection of starter tools, whether it's for the new graduate heading out into the world, a new homeowner or empty nesters heading into a less complicated, pared-down lifestyle. There really is everything you need here, from a basic hammer all the way to a nice cordless drill and 14.4-volt charger. In between, there's a great assortment of drill bits, driver bits, Allen wrenches, spade bits, hole saws with a mandrel, adjustable wrench, pliers, needlenose pliers, a hacksaw, level, tape measure, combination square, ratchet and sockets, a box cutter and fasteners. All for the price of a cordless drill alone—-and at such a price, we think it's a great idea to keep one set in the garage and one in the house. We tried to come up with a do-it-yourselfer job this kit couldn't handle… we're still thinking… but we wish we had this handy the last time we heard the words "some assembly required." You just can't go wrong with this set, whether it's your first tools or a compact, convenient set to keep in the house or garage.--Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Finally, a Tool Set For Everyday Use

Here's why I was interested in this tool set and why it's pretty much perfect.

a) Hated having to search through a giant toolbox over & over on every project because everything is tossed on top of each other. EVERY tool, component, etc has its own slot and it's a nice tight fit so if you drop it, the 178 pieces do not fall into one giant heap of tools, sockets, etc ...

b) While quality is important, if tools are just tools to you and you don't need/want a $1,000 tool set - these might not last three generations but they are all solid and work great and at a price where I don't have to worry about if people might make off with some tiny wrench.

c) No real compromises on what you get. Unlike other sets, it not missing some main tool. This one has a screwdriver, wrench, plier, crescent wrench set, hammer, saw, etc, etc ... not to mention the cordless drill. Look at the ZOOM photo - and unlike other sets where 100 screws count as part of a "115-set" tool kit, 99.5% of what you get are actual tools or actual attachments to tools. (there are $1,000 tool sets without a hammer!)

d) the box is nice. It's not pretty but it's solid heavy plastic and the pieces require effort to get in each slot - again, that's actually a good thing as I've had sets that look pretty in the picture but if you drop the tool kit, all the pieces fall in a heap and no one really likes to pick through 50 socket heads to put everything back or the 'holder' is some flimsy plastic that yellows, cracks or just gives up the ghost. This is very solid.

There's even a little extra room in the middle when it's closed that you can keep gloves and a towel there.

About the only thing missing is that if the bolt is very long, the crescent wrench does not have an extender and you can't really reach the nut but that's pretty obscure - not to confuse anyone - there is an extender if the nut is merely a ways from your hand but not if the bolt is exessively long.

Other than that, finally a set that will serve 99.9% of your average home, car and even some computer repair use (it has torx and even a tool/magnet retriever if you drop a screw somewhere) - ALL solidly built in a solidly built case with a slot for EVERYTHING. And of course, a great price also! It's excellent!

(Note - this review was written when the set was sold by Amazon at a much lower price than the current USED price).
This is *not* for professionals...

...SO if you are paid to put wooden things together, fix plastic things or do any of that jazz on a daily basis, then you should know better. Much better.

For someone like me, however, who occasionally puts cupboards and wardrobes from Ikea together, this kit is simply the best value for money I could find online and offline.

I've had it for about 3 months and it still performs as new. The drill doesn't come with diamond crystalized drill bits to break into safes; it comes with bits to drill holes into dry wall and brick wall. And it does a great job.

The plastic casing supporting the tools/holding them in place, feels a bit cheap but that's about the only problem I can identify.

Great cordless drill

The cordless drill in this set is great. I use it all the time. It's light weight and great for everyday use. I'm in construction so I use the drill and some of the tools all the time at work. Just remember to charge the drill at least three hours a day if you use it daily other then that it has giving me no problems yet. The only thing is it comes with just one battery. I wish there was two with the tool set.
Very useful tool set, excellent value

For me, the main reason to purchase this tool set was to build the Costco SUNRAY playground playset in my backyard.

As a new homeowner myself, I did not have any tools. And this is the list of the Required tools from Costco for building the playset:

Tape measure, Carpenters level, Claw hammer, Wood clamp,
Standard cordless drill with medium Phillips bit,
1/4" and 3/8" ratchet,
1/4", 7/16", 1/8" drill bit,
7/16", 1/2", 9/16" deep well socket,
9/16" box wrench.

I expected to spend two hundred dollars in Homedepot to have the complete set. Luckily I checked Amazon first and found the Allied 39025 tool set.
Sixty dollars and three days later, I have almost every tools I need.

I am no expert on tools, but after three days of intensive use, I feel this tool set is very solid, especially taking consideration of the value.
The drill is very powerful too.

If there is anything more I'd hope for, it would be an extra battery. But with the current price, I have no complain.
